“Consistency is one of the cornerstones of usability”
Last week Mike Hall led an incredible discussion around design systems. He focused on both their impact on teams/companies that use them and the designs that are created. You can view the full presentation below.
Mike discussed the key benefits of implementing design systems in companies:
1. Consistent Solutions: Instead of creating a component every time you start a new project, you can select from the library of components provided by the design system.
2. Sustainable Code: Similar to above, teams can select existing, tested code that is consistent across all projects.
3. Faster to release: Re-using existing, pre-tested components allow teams to complete projects faster as they do not have to focus on areas of work that have been completed in the past.
Mike finished the presentation by reminding us that design systems enable designers to focus on the problem at hand. They do not need to waste time on the wrong issues, such as determining if they are using the ‘right orange’ or if a button should have ’round edges or not’.
Thank you again Mike for the incredible presentation.
